Summary of Development

Residential:
Since opening in 1967, Columbia has offered a broad mix of home styles and types. These homes have been built in Columbia's nine villages and Town Center. Seven villages are essentially complete, with two others and Town Center in various stages of development.

 Currently there are 35,000 households in Columbia including Single-Family Detached, Town Homes, Condominium Apartments and Rental Apartments/Town Homes.

Population:
Almost 100,000 people reside in Columbia. Columbia's average household is estimated
at 2.5 occupants with an average income of $96,900. Seventy percent of the city's adults
have a college degree, while more than one-third have post-graduate degrees.

Business:
More than 5,500 businesses are located in Columbia occupying over 26 million square feet of space.

Employment:
Approximately 63,200 people are employed in Columbia.

Social/Institutional:
A wide variety of institutions are currently at work in Columbia including comprehensive health care, educational, religious and community facilities.

Education:
Columbia's 27 public schools are part of the Howard County public school system, ranked the best in the state. Thirty child care centers and pre-schools meet residents' early education needs, and Johns Hopkins University, Loyola College of Baltimore and Howard Community College provide adult education opportunities.

Retail/Commercial:
Columbia has nearly 4.8 million square feet of retail/commercial space. More than 500 stores and restaurants are located in The Mall in Columbia, Dobbin Center, Snowden Square, Columbia Crossing, the Columbia Restaurant Park, nine Village Centers, and numerous other locations.

Recreation:
 In addition to more than 5,300 acres of land set aside for parks, playgrounds
and natural open space areas, there is a broad array of recreational facilities and services offered by the Columbia Association (CA), Howard County Parks and Recreation, and private firms.
